All the walks are on public rights of way, make maximum use of quiet lanes, paths and bridleways and avoid traffic wherever possible. The walks take advantage of the varied topography of the area and a brief description at the start of the walk lets you know what to expect from each one. From some vantage points there are panoramic views to be had over the Vale of York and the Vale of Pickering with the North York Moors beyond. However, the Howardian Hills AONB has plenty of scenery and expansive views of its own. Over 15% of the area is covered by woodland, much of it deciduous with an abundance of wildlife, and many of the walks have woodland stretches included. Some walks are almost entirely on the flat; others have steady ascents and descents. Only a few have fairly stiff climbs, though none are excessively arduous. None are dangerous or difficult. All the routes are able to be walked at any time of the year, and the variety of agricultural activity and the seasonal changes in the landscape and foliage make repeat visits far from dull. Much work has been done in the AONB to improve waymark signage. Where there are any shortcomings, the description and plans in the book will keep you right.
