The Area of Outstanding Natural beauty covers over 200 sq.km., primarily in Ryedale but also stretching into the Hambleton District. Having no towns within its boundaries, it is best known for its stately homes at Castle Howard and Nunnington Hall, and its priories at Kirkham and Newburgh. Its villages, many with stone built cottages at their centre, are a pleasure to visit in their own right. But it is the idyllic, peaceful countryside that makes it brilliant walking country. Although it is crossed by the Ebor Way and Centenary Way, there are miles of footpath, lane and bridleway that will get you away from cars and crowds. There are walks for the beginner and experienced rambler alike This area is among the most beautiful but least known rural gems in England.
